Nor’easter kills one and leaves nearly 140,000 without power on US East Coast

A powerful nor’easter battered the US East Coast over the weekend, killing at least one person and bringing widespread flooding, damaging winds and power outages.

The storm affected areas from North Carolina to New England, including New York City and Boston, with rough seas, dangerous rip currents and coastal flooding.

About 150,000 households had lost electricity by Sunday morning, according to PowerOutage.US. That figure later dropped below 138,000.

Air travel was also disrupted, with FlightAware reporting more than 3,000 US flight delays and nearly 430 cancellations.

The Federal Aviation Administration advised passengers to check with airlines for updated information.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency across several counties as conditions worsened.

In Brooklyn, a 56-year-old New York City Housing Authority employee was killed on Saturday after a tree fell on him in a car park.

Flooding also hit communities along the Jersey Shore, forcing water into streets and homes. Eight New Jersey counties remained under a state of emergency.

The National Weather Service warned significant coastal flooding could continue from the Jersey Shore to North Carolina’s northern Outer Banks, with moderate flooding also expected along the Massachusetts coast.
