US jobless claims drop sharply below forecasts: Here’s why

In a latest update, US weekly jobless claims reportedly drop to 196,000, coming in below forecasts in another sign that layoffs remain rare and most Americans are benefiting from secure employment.

On Thursday, the Labour Department reported that jobless applications slid to 196,000 the fewest since mid-July and down from 206,000. Notably, the four-week average of claims dropped to 203,250. Jobless claims drop sharply to 196,000 well below economists' expectations.

Meanwhile, claims for jobless benefits are a proxy for workforce reduction because they can be a leading employment indicator of where the job market is headed. The American job market has underpinned consumer spending despite higher gasoline prices that have restricted consumers since geopolitical tensions began on February 28.

Employers, companies and government agencies have specifically been adding an average of 80,000 jobs a month including 162,000 in August. Nonetheless, this is finding an improvement over 2025 when monthly job creation averaged just 9,700 as high interest rates and Trump's potentially unstable changes in trade policies discouraged hiring.
