Nintendo Switch 2 bans lifted after mass ‘false ban’ incident

Nintendo is reported to be lifting the bans from the Switch 2 console that struck players worldwide over the weekend, triggering the panic among them.

Nintendo appeared to reverse the bans by Monday morning in Asia. The affected users encountered this specific error code on September 5 which stripped them of consoles’ online connectivity and access to game updates, eShop, multiplayer and digital or Game-Key card titles.

The massive bans triggered widespread online frustration and player panic over various platforms including Reddit. What was more disturbing for the users is that they were playing legitimate and new game cartridges.

Initial responses from Nintendo support agents blamed illegal software, adding to the confusion. However, later Nintendo Support representatives attributed the incident to a temporary system fault rather than a deliberate piracy crackdown.

But the company has not yet issued a formal statement regarding these sudden bans and how many users were affected.

Despite the weekend fuss and a modest 1.03 percent dip in Nintendo stock , analysts view the event as a short-lived service failure rather than a threat to hardware sales.

Such false ban incidents are not new. It mirrored previous launch-windows where users purchased used physical games which were later found to be illegally cloned. But legitimate buyers had success via customer support.

Nintendo’s hard policies on hardware bans has previously sparked international backlash such as legal challenges in Brazil regarding how device bans impact second-hand buyers who unwittingly purchase flagged consoles.
