Germany’s far-right set for historic victory in key eastern state
Germany’s far-right AfD is set for a sweeping victory in the regional elections
Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is projected to secure a major victory in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt ahead of its key competitors-though it is unclear whether that will be enough for the party to form a government.
The AFD has praised the outcome as a historic milestone and the charismatic leader in the state. Ulrich Siegmund has insisted on a majority government with any other party.
The AFD has praised the outcome as a historic milestone crediting its charismatic leader in the state for the victory. Ulrich Siegmund has insisted on a majority government with any other party.
Notably, no far-right has won control of a state in Germany since World War Two, a victory that would give it direct influence over domestic governance, local education and culture.
Saxony-Anhalt has a small population of 2.1 million and the AfD in the state is analyzed by homeland security as “right-wing extremist.”
According to AfD’s projected result is higher than earlier opinion polls, Siegmund with joint national leaders. Germany’s centre-left SPD described the outcome as dramatic and national leader Lars Klingbeil whose party is in a coalition with national administration with the CDU.
The recent turnout in Saxony-Anhalt was notably elevated at a projected 78% and AfD supporters in Magdeburg praised Siegmund’s achieving win in a political campaign.
The BSW has offered to collaborate with the AfD on select issues it enters into the state parliament. Furthermore, while the AfD led the national race ahead of Chancellor Friedrich Merz ruling conservatives’ and the Social Democrats, its firm support remained concentrated in the eastern states.
