Toronto storm cleanup begins as thousands remain without power across Ontario

Thousands of people remained without power across Toronto and southern Ontario on Thursday after a severe storm brought torrential rain, flooding, hail and widespread damage.

Toronto Hydro reported about 8,300 homes and businesses without electricity early Thursday, while Hydro One said more than 47,000 customers remained offline across the province.

Flooding forced closures on major Toronto roads, including parts of Yonge Street and the Don Valley Parkway, while some subway services were disrupted during Wednesday's evening rush hour.

Toronto officials said the city received roughly 1,000 service requests following the storm.

“City crews have been clearing debris and sediment and sweeping roadways since flood waters began receding overnight,” the city said on its website.

Officials said closures would remain until cleanup was completed and roads were considered safe.

The storm brought large hail and raised concerns about possible tornado activity.

Toronto Pearson Airport received about 40 millimetres of rain, leading to flight delays and cancellations.

The airport said operations were “returning to normal” Thursday morning but advised passengers to check their flight status.

The storm also caused significant damage to Toronto's 50,000-capacity Rogers Stadium.
