Apple tested shorter pencil for foldable iPhone that may never launch: What to know

Apple is currently testing a shorter stylus designed for its upcoming foldable phone, but the accessory may not reach customers, as concerns over screen durability have influenced the final outcome.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company has internally prototyped, tested and considered launching a modified Apple Pencil for its upcoming foldable model.

Gurman reported that the prototype emphasizes taking more physical space than the existing Apple Pencil models that are usually paired with iPads.

Unlike the existing styluses in Apple’s product offerings, this prototype would attach to the side of the foldable iPhone for easier storage and charging. This attachment design presents significant challenges as it would get in the way when opening the foldable device.

According to Gurman, a stylus could damage the surface with sharp foldable devices as their screens typically possess highly sensitive screens.

While this Apple stylus is highly unlikely to launch, Gurman offers more data that corroborates Apple’s testing of the white and dark grey options for the upcoming Apple Watch Series 12 ceramic cases.

Gurman also gives the key insight that Apple is testing a new smartwatch feature that keeps the heart-rate sensor active the entire day. In addition, Apple is redesigning its fitness and health app to resemble Whoop and Oura.
