UN nuclear watchdog calls on Iran to grant full nuclear access, declare uranium stockpiles

The board of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has passed a resolution calling on Iran to urgently declare its remaining enriched uranium stockpiles and provide broader access to international inspectors.

According to Reuters, citing diplomats, the resolution was submitted by the United States, Britain, France and Germany amid growing international concern over Iran’s nuclear programme.

Reuters reported that the motion passed with 21 votes in favour, three against and 10 abstentions.

Diplomats told the news agency that Russia, China and Niger voted against the resolution.

The measure urges Iran to grant the IAEA “all access it requires” to verify Iran’s compliance with international nuclear obligations.

The vote comes at a time of heightened tensions in the Middle East and increased scrutiny over Iran’s nuclear activities following recent military escalation involving the United States and Israel.

Iran has repeatedly insisted its nuclear programme is intended for peaceful purposes, while Western governments have raised concerns about uranium enrichment levels and monitoring access for inspectors.

The IAEA board resolution does not automatically trigger sanctions, but it increases diplomatic pressure on Tehran ahead of any future negotiations over its nuclear programme.
