Alaska eyes joint ventures, global alliances in major expansion drive

Alaska Air Group is reportedly restructuring its global footprint to amplify its impact. This strategy pivoted heavily toward Latin American partnerships and deeply integrated joint ventures which the Seattle-based carrier views as a rational move toward expanding its global presence.

The IATA Annual General Meeting in Rio de Janeiro stated on June 7: “Now that we are a global carrier, it's kind of the next stage of partnerships.”

According to the carrier's chief executive Ben Minicucci, the airline is seeking a close relationship with American. “We’re going to deepen our relationship [with American] and make sure Alaska is as successful as we can be as we launch global flights,” he said.

It is crucial to note that American has three existing joint businesses that could potentially integrate into Alaska as a potential partner.

It incorporates a Europe-US business with British Airways, Australia-US prime concern with Qantas Airways, and a Japan-US operation with Japan airlines. Alaska Airlines serves London and Rome in Europe, Osaka and Tokyo in Japan, Sydney in Australia, in line with data from aviation analytics. 

Meanwhile, Honolulu and Seattle serve as the carrier’s main international hubs. Alaska is reportedly seeking collaborative ventures and also depends on new Latin America partners. 

The airline terminated a durable partnership with LATAM Airlines; however, its remaining alliance partners continue to fly to the region.

“Stay tuned,” says Judson when asked about Alaska’s Latin America plans. “We’ve known it’s been a gap since we ended [the LATAM] relationship”, he added.
