Tim Walz under fire as JD Vance calls for DOJ investigation into Minnesota fraud scandal

Minnesota Governor and Attorney General Keith Ellison have been under fire due to their alleged complicity in a fraud scandal surrounding Minnesota’s social services.

In the wake of these allegations of complicity, the Vice President JD Vance has urged the Justice Department’s fraud division for criminal investigation into the role of these officials in the scandal.

A House Oversight Committee report led by Chair James Comer exposed that the fraud warnings were elevated to senior levels of the Minnesota state government as “meaningful corrective action was delayed or avoided, and payments continued long after credible red flags emerged.”

Comer also called for reviewing all of Minnesota’s social services program integrity measures, reimbursements, integrity measures and enrolment dating from 2019 to the present.

Soon after the release of the report, JD Vance took to X and issued a statement, “I’ve referred these allegations to the DOJ's new Fraud Division for criminal investigation. Minnesota state officials are not above the law, and if they facilitated fraud, lied under oath about what they knew, or harassed and intimidated whistleblowers, they must face justice.”

Tim Walz has been facing intense pressure due to fraud allegations as he and Ellison were recently grilled by House Republicans during a committee hearing regarding the scandal.

Walz denied allegations of ignoring financial abuse hurled by the Republicans.

The Minnesota fraud scandal gained national attention last year after a YouTube video regarding the alleged fraud in Somali-run childcare centers went viral. Later it was boosted by JD Vance, FBI Kash Patel and Elon Musk.

Based on the recent House Oversight Committee report titled “The Cost of Doing Nothing,” the fraud and oversight failures in Minnesota’s social services involve two main figures: around $300 million were lost in federal child nutrition funds through the Feeding Our Future pandemic feeding scam. Estimated $9 billion potentially lost or placed at serious risk across 14 "high-risk" state-managed Medicaid and social service programs.
