Aurora alert: Northern lights visible tonight at high latitudes
Skygazers have the best chance to see auroras across northern Europe if skies are clear
Stargazers have the opportunity to witness the northern lights, which could remain visible at high latitudes tonight (Jan.13-14) as Earth continues to feel the effects of solar winds.
Geomagnetic conditions have eased since the intense storming seen over the weekend; however space weather remains agitated, keeping auroras chances alive for far northern regions.
NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction and the U.K. The Met Office have revealed that with elevated solar wind speeds, high-speed solar wind has become the dominant driver.
Meanwhile, conditions could support G1 (minor) geomagnetic storm levels, though activity is expected to be more variable earlier this week.
Additionally, auroras are most likely to stay confined to higher latitudes with the best chances across northern Canada, Alaska, and parts of northern Europe-including northern Scotland- if skies are clear.
The UK Met Office has further indicated that unsettled geomagnetic activity may persist through Jan.14 due to the further re-enhancement from the easternmost portion of a corona hole.
The intense solar storms earlier this month have calmed, but current solar winds are strong enough to produce spectacular, shimmering displays.
