Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri disqualified in F1 title chase: Here’s why
Norris, Piastri are under investigation after Verstappen wins F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix
Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are both facing possible disqualification from the Las Vegas Grand Prix as every contestant is chasing the highly-coveted 2025 F1 title race.
The news came as Max Verstappen won the grand prix, while Norris finished the race in second and Piastri in fourth. Resultantly, Norris has taken the lead by 30 points.
The reason behind the disqualification is due to technical infringement, concerning excessive plank wear on both McLaren cars.
FIA technical delegate Jo Bauer has confirmed the rearmost skid block on both cars as it was measured to be less than the minimum required thickness of 9mm specified under Article 3.5.9 of the Technical Regulations.
According to stewards, “The thickness of the plank assembly was below the permitted minimum thickness.”
The document read: "The rear skids were re-measured in the presence of the Stewards and the three McLaren representatives, and those measurements confirmed that the skids did not comply with the regulations.”
Following the news of disqualification, the race winner Verstappen is the biggest beneficiary with regards to the 2025 Drivers’ Championship.
The Red Bull driver is now equivalent to Oscar Piastri, both holding 366 points. Norris remains in the lead with 390 points, a 24-point advantage in the standings.
The results of the 2025 title will be determined over the next two weekends, with 58 points remaining from two Grand Prix and one sprint.
