Lady Gaga finally breaks silence on Joker sequel box office disaster
Lady Gaga opens up about the period when she started receiving backlash over 'Joker: Folie à Deux'
Lady Gaga spoke openly about how the criticism of her movie Joker: Folie à Deux affected her.
The 39-year-old singer said that she was not as calm about all the hate and negative comments as people might think.
In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Gaga explained when the backlash first started, she found it almost unreal.
“When it first started happening, I started laughing. Because it was just getting so unhinged,” she shared.
In the film, the pop icon played Lee Quinzel, a fresh take on Harley Quinn, opposite Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker.
The first Joker movie has been a global hit, earning more than a billion dollars and several Oscar nominations.
But, the sequel failed to repeat that success and struggled very hard at the box office and drew mixed reactions from fans and critics.
The Poker Face hitmaker further admitted that while the initial criticism was easy to brush off, the ongoing negativity has been harder to deal with.
“When it takes a while for something to kind of dissipate, that can be a little bit more painful. Only because I put a lot of myself into it,” she added.
However, the Blood Mary singer continued saying that she channeled those emotions into her single Disease, which was inspired by how she felt after the film’s release.
“There was a ton of negativity around *Joker* … and I think I was feeling artistically rebellious at the time,” she added.
Reflecting on the experience, Lady Gaga said she has learned to accept that not everything she does will be loved.
“People just sometimes don’t like some things,” she said. “And you keep going even if something didn’t connect in the way that you intended.”
