Lando Norris clinches Mexico City GP, takes championship lead
World Champion is determined on the basis of points accumulated across Grand Prix and Sprint races
Lando Norris has won the Mexico City Grand Prix, marking a significant milestone in his race to clinch the World Champion title.
Norris stayed ahead from the first turn and dominated throughout, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finishing second and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen third.
His McLaren team, Oscar Piastri, now second on the points ladder, finished the race at fifth, thus giving Norris a one point lead over him.
Both McLaren teammates are top contenders for the world title.Current Formula One driver standings are:
- Lando Norris (McLaren): 357 points
- Oscar Piastri (McLaren) 356 points
- Max Verstappen (Red Bull) 321 points
- George Russell (Mercedes) 258 points
- Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) 210 points
The Mexico GP win marked a huge comeback for the 2024 runner-up in the Formula One World Drivers' Championship. Piastri has maintained the lead since overtaking Norris in the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and Norris has made a comeback at a very crucial moment.
With only four races remaining, F1 fans are in for some nailbiting finishes as the McLaren teammates compete for the World Champion title.
For context, in Formula 1, the World Champion is determined on the basis of points accumulated across Grand Prix and Sprint races.
If there is a tie in points at the end of the season, the champion is determined by a tie-breaker rule, starting with the most wins, then second-place finishes, and so on.
