Elon Musk predicts that solar power can supply the global demand for all of humanity’s energy
Musk has doubled down on his long-standing prediction that solar power will become the primary source of power for all human civilization
Elon Musk predicts that solar power will eventually become the single largest source of energy for human civilization, a future that he sees as inevitable due to overwhelming technological advancements. The vision is the central pillar of his newly released master plan and recent public statements in January 2026.
Musk affirmed that just 100 square miles of solar panels in places like Texas or New Mexico, paired with batteries could meet America’s full electricity needs-roughly 460 gigawatts on average.
He linked this to the 1964 Karashev Scale, where a Type 1 civilization masters all planetary energy and shared a remarkable SpaceX video of Earth from orbit to underscore the sun’s endless power.
Nonetheless, solar power represents the ultimate and only solution for a high-energy civilization. Musk argues that the energy challenges-ranging from the climate crisis to the massive electricity demands of AI- can be solved by scaling solar and battery storage to an entirely new level.
Additionally, while skeptics pointed to grid and storage hurdles, the rise of solar in 2025 demonstrated real progress toward this mission.
