Paris Tornado kills one, leaving multiple critically injured
Rare deadly tornado swept through north Paris, toppling trees and cranes, damaging several other buildings
One person died and several were critically injured after a deadly tornado struck an area in North Paris on Monday, October 20, 2025.
Reuters reported that the center of the tornado was Ermont commune in Val d’Oise, which is about 13 miles northeast of the French capital.
Authorities reported that the soaring twister collapsed three cranes and toppled multiple trees after it tore through Ermont in North Paris.
Moreover, several buildings in the area have also been reportedly damaged due to the deadly storm.
Regional prosecutor Guirec Le Bras confirmed that a 23-year-old construction worker was killed on a building site and 10 people had been injured, with four in critical condition.
According to local authorities, dozens of residents in the Val d’Oise division have been evacuated from their homes and were shifted to a local gym for shelter.
Officials explained that the people have been seriously injured as cranes, homes, and other buildings were ransacked by the winds.
At least 80 firefighters, 50 police officers, and 20 paramedic staff members were deployed at the Ermont site as a prompt emergency response to deal with the impact of falling debris.
The Keraunos Observatory, a French meteorological organization that monitors tornadoes and severe weather events, said that sudden gales appeared to have come from a "supercell-type storm."
In addition to that, the French meteorological department explained that “this type of thunderstorm is formed of a rotating updraft of circulating air that can sustain itself for hours and produce severe, sometimes devastating weather, including large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes.”
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez also confirmed the damage caused by the intensified storm through a post on social media.
“A sudden and rare intensity tornado episode struck several municipalities in the Val d'Oise, causing the death of one person and seriously injuring several others,” Mr Nunez wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).
“I am following the situation closely and express my support to the elected officials, the rescuers on site, and the affected residents. I also extend my condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased victims,” Nunez further added.
