Bluesky vs X: Decentralised social media comparison
Bluesky gives users more power over their experience
Bluesky is a social media platform that is often seen as a competitor to X (formerly Twitter). It was created as a research project within Twitter, but later became its own independent company.
Bluesky’s main selling point is that it is a “decentralised” social network, which gives users more control.
Unlike X, which is a single company controlling everything, Bluesky is built on an open standard called the “AT protocol.” This means users’ accounts and data are not locked to one company.
The platform gives users more power over their experience. Users can choose from or create their own “feeds” to see content that they want, rather than relying on one main algorithm. This is a big contrast to X’s algorithm, which some users feel is opaque and controlled by the company.
Bluesky’s approach to moderation is also different. While the company has a core team that enforces rules, it also allows for “composable moderation.” This means users can create and share their own moderation lists to filter out content they do not want to see.
It does not have a paid verification system like X. Instead, users can self-verify their identity by linking their own domain name to their account, which provides a layer of authenticity.
Bluesky has seen a huge jump in users, often during times of controversy on X. For example, when X was blocked in Brazil, Bluesky gained millions of users in a very short time.
The microblogging social media service has introduced video features, including an in-app video player and a dedicated vertical video feed. This is an effort to compete with platforms like TikTok.
Bluesky has made a public pledge not to use user posts to train its own generative AI models, a contrast to X, which has changed its policies to allow for this.
