Drone sightings disrupt flights at Copenhagen, Oslo airports
NATO’s North Atlantic Council is scheduled to meet Tuesday for further discussions
Flights were disrupted in Demark and Norway after multiple drone sightings forced temporary closures of two major airports on Monday.
Copenhagen Airport confirmed it shut its airspace when “two to three unidentified drones” were reported above. About 15 flights were diverted before operations resumed.
Police later said that three or four large drones were seen flying back and forth above the airport, though it remained unclear whether they were military or civilian.
“They're bigger than what a private person can usually buy,” duty officer Anette Ostenfeldt said, adding that police were continuing to investigate.
In Norway, Oslo Airport also suspended operations just before mid night following reports of a drone. All flights were redirected to near by airports, according to operator Avinor.
The incidents come at a tense time, as several European nations have accused Russia of recent airspace violations. Last week, Estonia said three Russian Mig-31 fighter spurts crossed its border without permission.
Poland also reported that 19 drones entered its airspace during a Russian strike on Ukraine, marking the first time NATO forces downed Russian drones over alliance home since the 2022 invasion. Romania later confirmed a similar breach.
NATO’s North Atlantic Council is scheduled to meet Tuesday for further discussions.
