In 20 previous visits with four different clubs, Moyes has never managed to win, collecting only six draws and suffering nine consecutive defeats.

The Toffees’ last win at Anfield came in 1999, although they did defeat Liverpool behind closed doors during the Covid-19 period under Carlo Ancelotti. Moyes now has new options to test the league leaders, with his team starting the season in sixth place.

The loan arrival of Jack Grealish has strengthened Everton’s attack. The England international has contributed four assists in four games, providing the creativity the club has often lacked. His performance against Aston Villa last weekend highlighted Everton’s attacking intent, as he created five chances despite the match ending goalless.

Alongside Grealish, Iliman Ndiaye and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall have added more variety going forward. Ndiaye’s dribbling ability and unpredictability bring a fresh element, while Dewsbury-Hall looks to push play forward with progressive passing. Young forward Tyler Dibling may also be given his debut to test Liverpool’s full backs.

Everton’s defence has also been solid, conceding only three goals so far this season. Michael Keane and Jake O’Brien have provided set-piece threats, while striker Beto has previously troubled Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk in derby encounters.

Liverpool remains strong at the top of the table, but recent issues at full-back could leave openings. On the right, Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley have been restricted by fitness concerns, forcing Dominik Szoboszlai into an unfamiliar role. On the left, Milos Kerkez has struggled for consistency, with Andy Robertson stepping in during midweek against Atlético Madrid.

History shows the challenge Everton face, but Moyes believes his squad now has the depth and attacking options to compete.

With Grealish and new arrivals providing energy and creativity, the manager hopes this could eventually be the occasion where his long wait for a victory at Anfield comes to an end.
