UCAS age rule stalls Oxford dream of Korean prodigy with IQ 204
13-year-old Korean genius who left high school, is preparing for Oxford University
Baek Kang-hyun, a Korean prodigy with an astonishing IQ of 204 has had a dream of attending Oxford University. Unfortunately, UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) age rule has stalled his dream.
Baek, 13, became a centre of national attention after securing an admission at Seoul Science High School at the age of 10 and earning top grades in A level exams.
Recently, Baek uploaded a video titled “Applying to the University of Oxford”, discussing his future plans to secure an admission in a prestigious institution.
“Many people have been worried and curious about my recent activities, so I’d like to update you. Over the past year and a half, I have been preparing for studying abroad in the UK and studying for the International A-Level exams,” he said in a video.
Baek also expressed his desire to enroll into Oxford’s Computer Science department as he achieved scores between 98 and 100 on past papers for the Oxford Mathematics Admissions Test (MAT).
Here is the catch for Baek. UCAS does not allow the test registration for those under 13 years old. Moreover, it is next to impossible to receive an UCAS ID and take the MAT exam, thereby derailing his dream.
However, Baek has contacted to Oxford’s authorities to seek guidance.
He continued, “I have contacted UCAS and Oxford University’s admissions office directly to inquire about my eligibility. They said I should receive a response by the end of this month.”
