Ben Affleck hit crime thriller alternate ending draws praises

Ben Affleck 2010’s film This Town, has experienced a resurgence quickly climbing to topping the charts.

Affleck solidified his work as both actor and director while working on the film, which intertwines romantic elements with social commentary.

Reported by El-Balad, the fans loved the alternate ending which is streamed on HBO MAX.

In the original version, Doug MacRay (Affleck), manages to escape the FBI, abandon his criminal life, and leave behind stolen money for his love interest, Claire. Although Doug flees to Florida, the ending offers a glimmer of hope for their reunion under better circumstances.

Meanwhile, in the alternate ending Doug still avoids arrests and dispatches the antagonist Fergie (Pete Postlethwaite), but he is ultimately confronted by the violent remnants of his past in Charlestown during his escape attempt. In a tense climax, Doug is shot fatally by a group he previously wronged.

Despite the main character dying in the alternate ending, the fans loved it because the original film attempted to show sympathy for Doug despite his criminal behaviour, transforming him into an unlikely hero.

The film was nominated for multiple awards, including Oscar nomination for Jeremy Renner for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Jem. He was also nominated in Golden Globes in the same category.

In addition to Affleck, Postlethwaite and Renner, the cast also includes, Rebecca Hall, Jon Hamm, Blake Lively and Dennis McLaughlin.

This Town was released on September 17, 2010. Along with Affleck’s direction, it was produced by Basil Wanyk and Graham King.
