Kurt Russell is officially returning for Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters on Apple TV+, putting an end to speculation about his character’s fate after the Season 1 finale.
The 73-year-old actor confirmed the news himself in a short video, as per Deadline,announcing that he’ll be back as Army officer Lee Shaw, a role he shares with his real-life son, Wyatt Russell, who plays the younger version of the character.
Season 1 left fans wondering if Russell’s Lee Shaw had survived after he chose to stay behind to fix a malfunctioning portal that would help the Monarch crew return to Earth.
In the dramatic finale, Lee fell from the ship and was pulled into the Hollow Earth, leaving his future uncertain, until now.
Alongside the Russells, Season 2 will feature returning cast members Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Joe Tippett, and Anders Holm.
The 10-episode sci-fi series follows two siblings as they uncover their family’s mysterious connection to Monarch, a secretive organization tied to the world of giant monsters.
Their search leads them deep into hidden truths and to Lee Shaw, whose story unfolds across two timelines, the 1950s and the present day, as Monarch faces new threats linked to Shaw’s knowledge.
Produced by Legendary Television, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters comes from executive producers Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures, along with Chris Black, Jen Roskind, Matt Shakman, Andrew Colville, and Lawrence Trilling.
Black will return as showrunner for Season 2, while Trilling will direct four episodes. Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita serve as executive producers on behalf of Toho Co., the company that owns the Godzilla character.
The first season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters received strong praise for its performances and world-building within the MonsterVerse.
With Russell’s return confirmed, fans can expect even more twists and exploration of the Hollow Earth when the series returns for its second chapter.
