Ruby Rose is calling out Sydney Sweeney following the disappointing box-office run of Christy, the new biopic centered on boxing icon Christy Martin.

The movie, directed by David Michôd, arrived in theaters last Friday and earned just $1.3 million domestically, one of the weakest openings in recent memory, according to Box Office Mojo.

Rose, 39, took to Threads on Tuesday and claimed she was originally lined up to portray Martin, whom she referred to as “Cherry.”

She wrote that the first version of the film’s script was “incredible” and “life changing,” adding, “I was attached to play Cherry.”

She went on to say many involved early on had deep familiarity with the story and that “most of us were actually gay.”

While she acknowledged that losing roles is part of the business, Rose became more pointed when addressing Sweeney’s reaction to the film’s performance.

Rose wrote, “For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for the ‘people’. None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us. You’re a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better.”

Her comments appear to reference Sweeney’s Instagram post from Monday, where the 28-year-old star thanked those who supported the film and reflected on its message.

Sweeney wrote, “Thank you to everyone who saw, felt, and believed and will believe in this story for years to come. if Christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded,” adding, “So yes I’m proud. why? because we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. and christy has been the most impactful project of my life. thank you Christy. i love you [sic].”

The film follows Martin’s breakthrough years in the ring, including her run from 1989 to 2012 and her WBC female super welterweight title win in 2009.

Despite the story’s real-life significance, Christy struggled to connect with audiences at the box office, and Rose’s public criticism has now stirred up additional conversation around the movie and its casting.
