Ethan Hawke remembers learning an acting lesson from Robin Williams

Ethan Hawke has recently admitted learning an acting lesson from late actor and Dead Poet’s Society costar Robin Williams.

The American actor, who was only 18 at the time of 1989 movie, described Robin as a “comic genius” in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE.

Ethan said, “Dramatic acting was still new to Robin at that time and watching that relationship like, in the room — I was four feet away while they're talking about performance — and that was something you don't un-see.”

“Robin didn't do the script, and I didn't know you could do that,” continued the Sinister actor.

Ethan explained that if Robin “had an idea, he just did it and he didn't ask permission”.

“And that was a new door that was opened to my brain, that you could play like that,” mentioned the Training Day actor.

Ethan noted that director Peter Weir and Robin had a “very different way of working, but they didn't judge one another or resist one another”.

“They worked with each other. That's exciting — that's when you get at the stuff of what great collaboration can do,” pointed out the actor.

Ethan further said that one doesn’t need to hate anyone because of having different perception.

The actor reflected that collective imagination “can become very, very powerful, because the movie becomes bigger that one person's point of view”.

“It's containing multiple perspectives,” he added.
