Colman Domingo is heading to Oz.
The Oscar-nominated actor has officially joined the cast of Wicked: For Good as the voice of the Cowardly Lion, Universal announced on Monday, October 20, through the film’s Instagram page.
In a playful reveal video, Domingo, 55, peeked out from behind a plush lion before smiling at the camera and teasing, “See you in Oz!”
Director Jon M. Chu had previously hinted that fans would be thrilled when they found out who was voicing the beloved character. “Man, wait until the red carpet when the actor who gave us the Cowardly Lion’s voice steps foot on it. It’ll be wild,” he teased.
The Cowardly Lion, first seen in the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz, returns in the Wicked universe with an emotional backstory. In the first film, the young cub was rescued by Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) after being imprisoned in class, setting up his later resentment toward Elphaba for altering his fate.
In Wicked: For Good, the cub is now grown and seen journeying alongside Dorothy, the Tin Man, and Scarecrow on the Yellow Brick Road, even appearing during the March of the Witchhunters number.
The sequel reunites Erivo and Ariana Grande, with Michelle Yeoh, Ethan Slater, and Bowen Yang also returning.
Wicked: For Good hits theaters November 21, continuing the story of friendship, magic, and destiny that changed Oz forever.
