James Gunn gives update on 'Superman' sequel, plot, release date

James Gunn has a good news for DCU fam!

The writer-director of the upcoming Superman: Man of Tomorrow has teased an update on the project’s progress.

In a recent appearance on The Howard Stern Show, Gunn revealed that the sequel to his Superman film will focus not only on David Corenswet's Clark Kent but also on Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor.

He explained that the film will follow Superman and Lex Luthor as they are forced to work together to take down a much bigger threat.

"It is a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat," he said. "And it's more complicated than that. It's as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie. I relate to the character of Lex, sadly."

Gunn also provided an update on the film's production schedule, stating that filming is set to begin in April 2026.

"That was at the beginning when I took on DC and I promised myself I'm slowing down at least a tiny bit. Although I am creating the Superman sequel that we're starting to shoot in April or so. … I'm done writing that for the most part," he said.

Gunn has a clear vision for the future of the Superman Saga, having already finished the treatment for the next story.

"I've already finished the treatment for the next story in what I'll call the 'Superman Saga.' The treatment is done, which means a very, very worked-out treatment. I'm working on that and hopefully going into production on that not too far away from today," he revealed.

Man of Tomorrow is set to hit theaters on July 9, 2027, as part of DC Studios' packed slate.
