‘HTTYD’ director breaks silence on Cate Blanchett’s return in sequel

How to Train Your Dragon director Dean DeBlois discussed the possibility of Cate Blanchett's return in the upcoming sequel of the film.

Blanchett previously voiced Valka, the presumed dead mother of protagonist Hiccup, who makes dramatic return to her family in the second instalment of the animated trilogy.

While speaking to Gizmodo, DeBlois was asked if the Oscar winner will be reprising the role, especially since Gerard Butler has also resumed the role of Stoic, Hiccup's dad.

"We are keeping our fingers crossed. But yeah, I don’t know it’s a little early to tell because I’m just writing the script," he said.

Blanchett, last month in conversation with Radio Times, revealed that she is "serious about giving up on acting."

"My family roll their eyes every time I say it, but I mean it. [There are] a lot of things I want to do with my life," she said.

How To Train Your Dragon follows the story of a misfit Viking teenager Hiccup, who is initially tasked to hunt the dragons as a part of his Viking training but instead he befriends an adorable dragon, Toothless. Forging an unlikely alliance that changes the fate of their world.

In addition to Butler, the live adaptation includes Mason Thames as Hiccup and Nico Parker as Astrid.

The film’s first part is set to premiere on June 13, while its second part will be released on June 11, 2027.
