BA student shot dead

A student of BA was shot dead by two unidentified bikers over some petty issue in the Misri Shah police limits on Tuesday.

Police have removed the body to morgue for autopsy. The victim has been identified as Ali Akbar Shah, 21. He was on his way when two bikers intercepted him. The accused got furious and opened fire at him. As a result, he received bullet injuries. 

The victim was rushed to Nawaz Sharif Hospital where he succumbed to injuries. Police reached the scene and collected forensic evidence. Further investigations are underway. 

fire safety: The DG Rescue Punjab reviewed performance of the Fire Service of Rescue 1122 and said it was need of the hour to ensure implementation of fire & life safety standards as per building bylaws to prevent increasing numbers of fire incidents and protect the citizens, especially those living in highrises.

The fire emergency data showed that back-to-back fire incidents took place due to violation or poor implementation of fire & life safety codes. He also stressed the need for sensitising the public for timely call in case of all the emergencies, especially fire incidents.

During a briefing, the Provincial Monitoring Cell (PMC) Rescue 1122 Punjab revealed the fire service had responded to 11,564 fire emergencies; saved losses worth over Rs. 26 billion and rescued 863 emergency victims in fire emergencies due to timely response and professional firefighting on modern lines in all the districts of Punjab during 2015. It has been further observed through a data of the Provincial Monitoring Cell Punjab that 863 persons were injured during fire emergencies all over the Punjab including 353 in Lahore, 73 in Rawalpindi and 70 in Faisalabad whereas 68 people died all over the Punjab in fire emergency during 2015. Furthermore, 6,017 fire cases took place due to short circuit, 670 due to gas leakage and the causes of 1,916 fire incidents were ascertained due to carelessness. The PMC maintained that 112 cases were reported in LPG cylinder blasts, 77 fireworks, 75 candle-lights, 156 kitchen fires, 42 forest fires, 1,047 undetected, 3,532 other fires. The Rescue 1122’s Fire Service shifted 400 injured to different hospitals in Punjab whereas 395 people were provided first aid. The comparative analysis further shows that total 4,277 fire emergencies took place in commercial areas and 3,756 in residential and 3,532 in other areas.

The DG Rescue Punjab said although the Rescue 1122’s modern Fire Service since its inception in 2007 had saved losses worth over Rs. 189 billion while providing swift response to over 70,000 fire incidents and professional firefighting on modern lines, there was a dire need to establish an effective fire prevention system and an effective land use & building control authority. The effective firefighting in all the fire emergencies is linked with the implementation of fire safety standards. He highlighted the core areas, which needed to be addressed by the building owners of highrises to ensure safe building construction, installation of proper emergency exits & stairs, fire alarms, availability of fire extinguishers, fire hydrants & sprinklers' systems for highrises, industry & warehouses for prevention of fire emergencies. He further said the owners of the industrial units and occupants of highrises should also realise the significance of proper exits & fire safety and requested them not to risk their lives and their businesses by avoiding safety measures for limited financial gains compared to the total investments.  

class at jail: Superintendent of Camp Jail Shahram Khan said that for the rehabilitation of prisoners, different steps had been taken by the jail administration including setup of a school for juveniles with proper uniform and the start of electrician class for drug addicts. He added that participation of civil society was very important for converting criminal minds into law abiding citizens. He expressed these views while distributing new pairs of shoes, socks and mattresses with bed sheets among  juvenile prisoners in cooperation with a local NGO. 

CCPO: The civil district administration and police high-ups held a meeting to discuss issues relating to the Orange Line Metro project at CCPO’s office on Tuesday.

Speaking on the occasion, City Police Chief Capt. ® Amin Wains said the Lahore police had devised a comprehensive traffic plan. He said the police would fully cooperate with the civil administration on issues and conflicts arising due to displacement of shops and houses due to route of the Orange Line Metro project.

District Coordination Officer Cap. ® Muhammad Usman said they had completed the door-knocking of all the houses and shops coming in the route of Orange Line Train project and settled all the issues with them. He said they had completed mapping of the route and the payment to all the displaced owners.

DIG Operations Dr. Haider Ashraf assured the participants of the meeting that all the SPs, DSPs and SHOs would cooperate with the civil administration in their respective areas where the route passed. 

Guard dies: A 60-year-old man died under mysterious circumstances in the Ghalib Market on Tuesday. Police said victim Ijaz Ahmad worked as a security guard. On the day of incident, he fell unconscious. His colleagues got him admitted to a hospital where doctors pronounced him as brought dead.
