CINE WATCH

It’s a Hollywood affair

Three new movies are set to hit local screens this weekend, all from tinsel town. First up on the ticker board is Alice Through the Looking Glass, the sequel to Johnny Depp and Mia Wasikowska-starrer Alice in Wonderland. The sequel sees Alice return to Underland where her friends – the White Queen, the Cheshire Cat, the White Rabbit and more – tell her about Mad Hatter’s depressed state of mind. Alice then travels back in time to redress old wrongs. The film has received mixed reviews internationally but critics have praised individual performances. This one’s more for loyal fans of Depp and Tim Burton.

Also releasing this weekend is Warcraft, based on Blizzard Entertainment’s mega hit game. Starring Travis Fimmel and Paula Patton, Warcraft tells the origin story of the war between humans and orcs – green-blooded hulks wanting to invade Azeroth for a new home. If you haven’t played the game, this film may skip from your mind altogether but gaming enthusiasts will enjoy this epic fantasy.

Finally, Jodie Foster’s Money Monster starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts, which made a mark at the recently concluded Cannes Film Festival, comes to cinema this weekend.

Clooney stars as a TV host/Wall street guru who picks up on hot stocks on his show until a disgruntled investor barges in and hijacks the show for giving out a wrong tip that made him lose all his money. With Julia Roberts essaying the role of Clooney’s producer in the film, it’s an intense thriller that takes on the murky financial world and is a great example of Hollywood’s recent love affair with all things Wall Street.

FASHION

Of trunk shows and store launches

Actor, model and morning show host Juggun Kazim doesn’t need an introduction. The rosy-cheeked beauty has already carved a niche for herself in the world of entertainment by reprising several different avatars over the years and is now all set to add another feather to her cap. Kazim will open the doors to her flagship prêt store today, giving the public a chance to emulate the starlet’s style. The shop will be open for business over the weekend and is located on M.M. Alam road.

Upcoming designer Hira Ali garnered much acclaim with her runway debut. The designer showcased a minimalistic capsule collection that featured structured silhouettes paired with norm core elements for a unique aesthetic, marrying conceptualisation with wearability. Ali is all set to showcase her complete collection at a trunk show in Lahore on Sunday at the PFDC Fashion Active in Mall One, Lahore, where Curioser and Curioser will be available for retail. We’re excited to see what this young gun has to offer.

Port city-based design duo Menahel and Mehreen, who have a penchant for shying away from media and maintaining a low-key brand image will bring their chic aesthetic to Lahore. The duo is hosting their annual Spring/Summer 16 exhibition at the Nishat Hotel on Kasuri Road with their formals and bridals available for order while a select set of pret-a-porter can also be purchased off the rack. It’s available on a first come first serve basis, so you might want to get there bright and early ladies!

COMEDY

Comedy with a twist

Jokes are going to be dirtier, grittier and downright offensive this weekend as the Comedy Scene Karachi gang return with a brand new show titled Fitna, Fasaad aur Muhabbat. The show comes with a warning that it is not for the meek-hearted. Those afraid of blatant, honest reality should, therefore, stay away. With ten performers all set to take over The Mad School on Saturday night at 8:00pm, prepare for a night of rambunctious laughter.

Word of advice: If you are planning to attend, go with an open and tolerant mind.

On Sunday, Shehzad Ghias, Ali Gul Pir and Akbar Chaudhry are getting their Muslim swag on and opening fire on Donald Trump – not literally but through what they do best: comedy. The show is called Muslim Comics Roast on Donald Trump, and promises to put words to your deep-rooted feelings for the current US Presidential hopeful. Set to take place at the T2F, the show will definitely tickle your funny bone.

Improv theatre is the newest trend in Karachi’s cultural calendar and the members of The Platoon are coming for a final performance before Ramazan begins and we look for our lost spiritual self. The show titled Reporting for Duty before Ramazan will feature multiple formats and diverse set of live performances based around audience interaction and complemented with music. The show will be held at T2F, this Saturday. For tickets and further information, refer to their official event page on Facebook.
