Given the conservative nature of Pakistani masses, it was quite daring of Fawad Khan to play a gay character in Kapoor & Sons, which released earlier last month and became a roaring success. And while he plays the role effortlessly, it wasn’t one that came naturally to him at the time of shooting. In fact, Fawad was very nervous and so was his director Shakun Batra.

In a recent interview with Filmfare, the director revealed that both he and Fawad were nervous about the audience’s reaction to Fawad’s character. “I’m comforted by the thought that the film found its audience. Because when we were making the film the constant feedback that we got was that it was a niche film. Would people accept it? What would be the reactions to Fawad Khan’s character? I was concerned about these,” he said, adding, “There were a lot of jokes between Fawad and me about his homosexual character. I used to say, ‘Bro! Your career is over. People are going to f****ng hate you. You have a female fan following that will just run away’. We used to laugh and use the humour to cover up our nervousness.”

Thankfully, things panned out differently than expected and fans were more than happy with Fawad going out of his comfort zone. The film was dubbed as 2016’s highest overseas grosser and made over 100 crores in less than a week. This only added to Batra’s confidence in a content-driven script. “People won’t just pay for stupid entertainment; they’ll also pay to connect with a story and its characters,” he added.
