The Ministry of Health and the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) have agreed to constitute a reform committee, which will be tasked with streamlining the procedures and functioning of PMDC. The terms of reference of the committee will soon be developed.
A decision to this effect was taken Thursday when PMDC President Professor Dr. Masood Hameed along with Vice President Professor Dr. Syed Muhammad Awais called on Minister of State for Health Saira Afzal Tarar. Secretary (Health) Muhammad Ayub Sheikh and Director General (Health) Dr. Assad Hafeez were also present on the occasion.
The PMDC president briefed Saira on the functioning of PMDC. Detailed discussions were held on ways and means to improve the quality of medical education and to resolve issues faced by medical students and graduates. The meeting also discussed the issue of moratorium on opening of new medical colleges and matters relating to registration of foreign students.
There was consensus that educational audits need to be conducted as part of efforts to improve the quality of medical education in Pakistan.
