Armed assailants shot dead a head constable of the Gulshan-e-Iqbal police and his friend in the Korangi area late Thursday night.
Court Mohrar of the Gulshan-e-Iqbal police, Constable Zafar-ul-Hassan, and his friend, Javed Shakil, had been sitting outside the policeman’s home near Nusrat Petrol Pump in Korangi 1 ½ when armed men riding a motorcycle approached them and opened fire before fleeing, according to the Zaman Town police.
Both men were shifted to the policeman and his friend were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre in injured condition where HC Zafar and his friend breathed their last.
Zaman Town police said the attack was targeted since the armed assailants used 9mm pistols and targeted HC Zafar while shooting.
The double murder was said to be a targeted attack.
Dacoits killed
Two alleged robbers were gunned down in separate shootouts with the police in Gizri and Shershah areas.
The first encounter took place within the remit of Shershah police station whose officials received information late Friday night that armed robbers were looting citizens at Jinnah Road. A contingent reached the location and engaged the suspects.
After a brief armed encounter, one of the suspects was arrested in injured condition while his associate managed to flee. The injured robber was shifted to Civil Hospital Karachi where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The police claimed to have recovered a pistol from his possession.
In Gizri, said SHO Imran Zaidi, personnel of the Gizri police station received information via Madadgar 15 that armed robbers had barged into a house situated on Khyaban-e-Ittehad, Phase-VII DHA. A police party raided the house and a firing exchange ensued with the suspects, one of whom was killed while his companion escaped.

Man dies in accident
A man identified as Taimur Saeed, 36, was run over by a speeding tanker on Khayaban-e-Jami, within the remit of Clifton police station.
He was rushed to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where he was pronounced dead. Police said the deceased was a resident of Gulistan-e-Jauhar and had been in the area to visit a friend. He had been on his way home on his newly-bought sports bike when he died.
The face and upper torso of the deceased was badly damaged and the body was handed over to the legal heirs after the relevant medico-legal formalities.
Police said the deceased used to run a car business and leaves behind a widow, a son and two daughters. A case has been registered and investigations are underway.
