President says he considers Nawaz as PM even now; PML-N chief

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and PML-N President Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday agreed to continue the reconciliation policy in line with the ‘Charter of Democracy (CoD),’ signed by Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif.

 

The two leaders reached the agreement during a meeting at the Aiwan-e-Sadr.Talking to the media, both President Zardari and Nawaz Sharif stated that Pakistan’s problems could not be resolved by a single party as they had decided to work together to solve these problems. Nawaz termed the meeting a success and denied rumours of bitterness. He said there were no grievances and the major goal was to make the country prosperous and peaceful.

 

Both the leaders stated they would work on the agenda so that the people could be given relief. Earlier, President Zardari congratulated Nawaz on his party’s victory in the elections and wished the coming government good luck. He said the nation, all the political parties, democratic forces and civil society deserved praise for a peaceful democratic transition taking place for the first time in the history of the country.

 

He thanked Nawaz for accepting the luncheon invitation, hosted in honour of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang at the Presidency. He expressed the confidence that after political transition, the new government would successfully address the problems and issues being faced by the country. The overall situation in the country also came under discussion.

 

Later, Senator Ishaq Dar and Senator Pervaz Rasheed joined the meeting.It was learnt that during the one-to-one meeting between President Zardari and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, the president also invited Nawaz, which was appreciated by the Chinese premier.

 

Agencies add: Meanwhile, Nawaz Sharif said that it was time for the political leadership and state institutions to join hands for overcoming the challenges being faced by the country. He said the policy of reconciliation initiated by Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto would continue to jointly steer the country out of crises. He said, “We will forget the past bitterness and will move forward to resolve theproblems being faced by the people and the country.”

 

The PML-N chief said that the people had elected him to serve the nation and he would make all possible efforts to come up to their expectations. He said, “We have to protect the interest of Pakistan with the support of the people.”

 

Nawaz said that he wanted cooperation of other parties to solve the problems like loadshedding, economic crisis, terrorism and others.Earlier, President Zardari said Nawaz would enjoy full cooperation from the Aiwan-e-Sadr as prime minister. The president said it was time that all the political forces should work together for making Pakistan prosperous and a developed country. He appreciated Nawaz for his policy of reconciliation and hoped it would lead to addressing the problems of the country. Zardari said he had nothing to do with politics and it was the job of Makhdoom Amin, being the president of the PPPP, to take any decision. However‚ he said that he considered Nawaz as the prime minister even now.
