Hundreds of students of Sindh University protested against the recent increase in university tuition fees. They believe that this fee hike is likely to compel a majority of students, especially those who belong to low-income households, to discontinue their education. It is also important to mention that over the years the federal government stopped allocating sufficient funds to universities. After the 18 Amendment, state-run universities witnessed a significant drop in government funding. This problem is not limited to Sindh. Almost every university is relying on tuition fees (paid by students) to meet its operating costs.
The provincial governments must look into this issue. Many students are being deprived of higher education just because they are not financially strong. The authorities need to draft a well-thought-out plan to tackle this issue.
