Deafening silence

June 22, 2021

When women march for their rights, bodily autonomy, and freedom in their own country, it is considered an ‘unIslamic act’. A fatwa is issued immediately. People start talking about the religion only when it’s time to remind a woman of her place in our society. However, when a cleric is found guilty of sexually abusing a student, everyone remains silent. Recently, a video of a student being molested by a cleric went viral on social media. According to the reports on social media, when the victim tried to come forward to file a complaint, he was blackmailed. The cleric, Mufti Aziz ur Rehman, initially tried to question the intentions of the student and added that he was intoxicated. Now, he has finally been arrested. However, the questions are: Where are the country’s clerics? Why aren’t they raising their voice against him?
