The Muttahida Qaumi Movement accused the ruling Pakistan People’s Party on Tuesday of rigging the upcoming local government polls by appointing returning officers of their choice at polling stations in violation of the election commission rules.
Addressing a press conference, MQM MNA Kunwar Naveed Jameel said the employees of the Sindh secretariat, police and the Board of Revenue were being transferred before the elections.
“The orders for transfer and posting of returning officers should immediately be withdrawn,” he demanded.
Jameel said since the schedule for the local bodies polls was announced, the law-enforcement agencies had been arresting MQM activists, supporters as well as its candidates an d taking them to undisclosed destinations.
“A conspiracy is being hatched to steal the mandate of the MQM, but the success recent election of the NA-246, the unopposed victory of our candidates in Hyderabad is a slap on the faces of those who want to eliminate the party.”
Jameel said the local government elections in Karachi would also prove that the people still supported the MQM.
He added that the MQM legal aid committee is reviewing the technical points to approach the court if the returning and deputy returning officers appointed by the PPP government were not removed.
He demanded that the prime minister should take notice of these transfers and postings.
