Recent floods and rising temperatures have profoundly impacted lives and agriculture, highlighting the urgent need for effective climate policies and actions. Addressing these challenges requires strong political commitment, robust institutional capacity and adequate funding. However, the current budget allocations paint a concerning picture. Funds for environmental protection have reportedly been cut.
While allocations for adaptation, including disaster preparedness and emergency systems, appear sufficient, there are concerns about the government’s commitment to green energy transition, particularly with increased taxes on solar energy imports. It is imperative that Pakistan adopts a holistic approach to effectively transition to green energy, strengthen institutional capacity and control climate risks. The threat of climate change is immediate, not distant. Delays will only lead to further climate-related harm and calamities.
