Pak delegation earns praise for diplomacy at UN
Diplomat Irfan Soomro, brother of late Senator Ayaz Soomro, played discreet but vital role in behind-the-scenes diplomacy
NEW YORK: The nine-member Pakistani delegation, led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, has been praised for presenting a united and coherent stance on Pakistan’s foreign policy at the United Nations, with commendable cooperation among members, affiliated with various political parties including the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN), MQM, and others.
Former Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani and former Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua, known for their extensive diplomatic experience, provided valuable insights behind the scenes, quietly supporting the delegation’s strategy without making public statements.
Other prominent members of the delegation — Dr Musadik Malik, Khurram Dastgir, Faisal Sabzwari, and Hina Rabbani Khar — actively contributed to the delegation’s engagements at the UN and related meetings, displaying professionalism and unity. Hina Rabbani Khar was noted for her composed demeanour and attentiveness during proceedings.
While one female member’s more expressive style drew media attention, the overall seriousness and focus of the delegation remained intact. Senator Sherry Rehman stood out as an effective organiser, supporting Bilawal Bhutto Zardari in consultations and logistical planning. Diplomat Irfan Soomro, brother of the late Senator Ayaz Soomro, played a discreet but vital role in behind-the-scenes diplomacy.
Bilawal’s leadership was central in maintaining cohesion within the delegation, allowing each member to function as part of a coordinated, silent, and strong team.
The delegation’s engagements included high-level meetings with the UN Secretary-General, the President of the General Assembly, diplomats from China, Russia, France, the United States, and members of the OIC Contact Group. These were arranged through the efforts of the Pakistan Mission to the UN, under the guidance of Ambassador Asim Iftikhar, who also earned praise for his diplomatic groundwork and logistical coordination.
Before concluding the visit, the delegation held an interaction with select members of the Pakistani community and addressed a press conference, where Bilawal briefed the media on the outcomes of the visit.A quiet and closed-door meeting between Bilawal and Pakistan’s outgoing UN Ambassador Munir Akram also took place, the details of which were not disclosed. When asked by reporters, Ambassador Akram smiled but remained tight-lipped on any sensitive discussions, particularly concerning ongoing conflicts.Despite recent criticism of the UN’s effectiveness, especially following its handling of the Gaza crisis, the visit by the Pakistani delegation was viewed as more successful and effective than expected, reaffirming the country’s continued commitment to multilateral diplomacy.
