CM calls for reading books for knowledge, literacy and social uplift
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah said in his message on World Book and Copyright Day on Wednesday that books are a bridge connecting generations and cultures.
His message reads, “Youth should make friends with books. It is the key to development. Reading books broadens thinking and improves society. If libraries are established, minds will be enlightened.”
Shah said literature is the mirror of our civilization and identity. It is our responsibility to promote Urdu and Sindhi language and literature. Youth should study literature, connect with our history and heritage, he said and added that the promotion of books for knowledge, literacy and social development is the need of the hour.
The CM further stated that the Sindh government is taking steps to instill the love of reading among the youth. Moreover, Chief Minister Shah also issued his message on World English Language Day. Shakespeare's language is a means of connecting the world. English has become an important language of global diplomacy and communication. Global opportunities can be achieved by promoting English education, reads the message.
English language teaching is being made more effective in our schools and universities. We pay tribute to Shakespeare's literary services, Shah said. Both World English Language Day and World Book and Copyright Day are celebrated on April 23.
World English Language Day recognizes the significance of the English language as a global means of communication. It's also a tribute to William Shakespeare, whose birthday and death date are both commemorated on April 23.
Shakespeare's impact on the English language is immense, introducing hundreds of words and phrases still in use today, such as "gossip," "fashionable," and "lonely". The United Nations celebrates this day to promote multilingualism and cultural diversity.
World Book and Copyright Day promotes books, reading, and copyright protection. It's a celebration of the written word's power to bridge cultures and generations. The date April 23rd was chosen to honour notable authors like Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes, and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, who all died on this day. UNESCO selects a World Book Capital each year to promote reading and literature. This day emphasizes the importance of literacy, multilingualism, and access to knowledge.
The key aspects of World Book and Copyright Day are promoting literacy and encouraging people to develop a love for reading and learning. Moreover, advocating for diverse languages and cultural expression and safeguarding authors' rights and creative works.
