PU students clash as VC takes charge
LAHORE:A violent clash broke out between two student groups at the Punjab University’s New Campus on Monday evening, resulting in some students being injured and leading to multiple arrests by the police.
The incident coincided with the arrival of Prof Dr M Ali who was at the New Campus to assume his job as the 64th VC of the Punjab University. The activists belonging to the Islami Jamiat Tulaba (IJT) and Baloch students clashed at Hostel No 8 where Jamiat was holding an event. Besides PU security guards, a police contingent also arrived to control the situation. The police took a number of students into custody with Baloch students alleging that the police only arrested their fellows and spared Jamiat activists involved in the incident. They demanded immediate release of their fellows.
A PU spokesperson said the new VC had taken notice of the incident and firmly declared that violence on the campus would not be tolerated under any circumstances. He ordered strict legal action against those involved and emphasized his commitment to ensuring a peaceful educational environment at the university.
