This letter refers to the news story ‘World’s first head transplant machine Revealed’ (May 23, 2024). According to the report, within a period of eight years “the prototype developed by BrainBridge may be prepared to carry out the ground-breaking medical procedure”. However, the point of this letter is to examine the ethical side of this bioengineering marvel if it materializes. With the advent of ChatGPT and other AI generative text tools, we are already facing the extensive use or rather misuse of new technologies.
When Stephen Hawking said the AI will one day take over humanity he probably meant the AI will stall the intellectual growth of humans. We have already seen this drag occurring amongst the newer generations. This human transplant story could be a disastrous turn in human history if not regulated and not placed under strict ethical and legal controls. Things could end up on the evil side of the spectrum so we need to be cautious in the implementation of new technologies.
