Rawalpindi: The Chief Engineer (Punjab), Khalid Hussaini has taken notice on the news item published in 'The News' titled 'Punjab CM urged to initiate inquiry against MCR' that Rs2.075 billion spent on re-carpeting of roads that were already in fine condition. The Chief Engineer (Punjab) told 'The News' that I have inquired Town Officer (TO) Infrastructure and Services Rafaqat Gondal and directed him to explain in a detailed manners. "I have taken this serious issue to point out the corrupt mafia in Rawalpindi," the chief engineer claimed. He also assured that I will conduct a full inquiry of the matter that why MCR officers misguided former commissioner for re-carpeting of Rawalpindi roads while that were already in fine condition. He also admitted that being a poor nation, we could not afford to spend public money on unnecessary projects. I will fully investigate this issue, he assured 'The News' here on Monday.
It is worth mentioning here that this corrupt practice 're-carpeting of roads' was continued for years. Every year, government officers start re-carpeting of roads that were already in fine condition. It was pointed out many a time but nobody took any kind of notice against it, resulting billions of rupees were gone in the pockets of corrupt government officers and contractors.
The residents of Rawalpindi have appealed to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to initiate a high-level inquiry against corrupt officers of Metropolitan Corporation Rawalpindi (MCR) Infrastructure and Services (I&S) department for their alleged role in spending Rs2.075 billion on the re-carpeting of roads that were already in fine condition.
