LAHORE: Lahore Gymkhana Golf Course will host the 3rd Ghazala Ansari Challenge Cup from Tuesday (today).

Dr Asma Afzal Shami, the chairperson of the organising committee, along with Gymkhana Golf Convener Shaukat Javed, referee Munazza Shaheen, and Mrs. Bela Azam from the event’s sponsor, Julke, shared insights into the tournament’s significance at a press conference held on Monday.

Dr Shami recounted the inspirational story behind the Ghazala Ansari Challenge Cup, revealing that the idea was sparked by a poignant realisation. A conversation with a young golfer who was unaware of Ghazala Ansari’s towering contribution to the sport led Dr. Shami to establish a championship in her honor.

Ghazala Ansari remains an iconic figure in Pakistani women’s golf. She dominated the ladies’ golf circuit for over two decades. With six National Championship victories and numerous other titles, her illustrious career continues to inspire young golfers, especially women, in Pakistan.

This year’s tournament introduces the Ace Junior Golf League as a new feature. The 3rd Ghazala Ansari Julke Challenge Cup gains added significance as it is now included in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR). This inclusion provides participants with the opportunity to earn valuable points and gain international recognition.

Mrs. Bela Azam expressed privilege in sponsoring the Challenge Cup and emphasised the aim to inspire a new generation of female golfers to follow in Ghazala Ansari’s footsteps. Shaukat Javed, the Gymkhana Golf Convener, conveyed his excitement about hosting the event and highlighted the historical significance of Lahore Gymkhana Golf Course as Ghazala Ansari’s home turf.

He commended Dr. Asma Shami’s dedication to the advancement of ladies golf in Pakistan and assured support for women’s golf at Gymkhana.

Munazza Shaheen, emphasising the role of qualified refereeing, highlighted its importance in maintaining professionalism. She acknowledged the increased interest in understanding and applying golf rules.
