This letter refers to the news report ‘Ex-Pindi commissioner says rigging allegations drama planned by ‘senior PTI leadership’ (February 23, 2024).
‘Speak of truth as if you are lying and speak of lies as if you are telling the truth so the actual truth vanishes in the middle somewhere’. This saying encapsulates the sorry state of our politics, which has now trickled into officialdom. Distinguishing between real and fake news is getting more and more difficult by the day so most of us take the easy way out and trust whichever story is told to us but with a pinch of salt. This inevitable addition of ‘a pinch of salt’ makes information contaminated from the onset and the truth evaporates in thin air.
This ex-commissioner alleged severe rigging and has now suddenly taken a complete U turn. It is almost impossible to judge if the first ‘unearthing’ was under duress or this second one is. Do we believe what he said earlier or do we believe what he is saying now? Again, the bottom-line is that the truth has been buried so deep that it will be impossible to conclude what is right or wrong. The authorities should thoroughly investigate the ex-commissioner’s claims and the reversion of those claims and send a strong message against such reckless and irresponsible behavior by a high ranking and experienced government official.
