The 2024 general elections were a significant step forward for Pakistan’s politics. Regardless of who forms the next government, the country’s democracy will come out the winner. The most encouraging aspect was the increased voter turnout. The people were passionate and very serious about their vote, irrespective of which party they supported. Other than the delay in the results, I think things went well for the most part.
It is high time that we consolidate the democratic process in Pakistan. Any controversies or disputes related to the results should be sorted out by the courts within the constitutional framework and in a timely manner. Moreover, the politicians need to start putting the interests of the country ahead of their own ambitions. It is only through accepting and upholding the public mandate that democracy can thrive in a state as diverse as Pakistan.
