LAHORE: The Punjab Home Department Tuesday imposed Section 144 across the province in anticipation of possible clashes between the contesting candidates and rival political parties and groups.
According to the notification, to maintain law and order across the province, Section 144 has been imposed.
The notification said it had been reported that there existed a threat to the law and order situation and public peace in the province during the Feb 8 general elections.
In the wake of elections, a large number of political gatherings, rallies corner meetings etc. are likely to be held by the contesting candidates and political parties for 141,297 seats of national and provincial assemblies respectively all over
Punjab which may serve as a soft target for any desperate act by terrorist and miscreants.
Besides this, given the past history, the possibility of clashes between the contesting candidates and rival political parties or groups in different areas, cannot be ruled out which may pose a threat to public peace and order in the province.
Citing such threats, the Home Department enforced Section 144 till Feb 12 and prohibited the carrying and display of all kinds of weapons including the licensed ones, types of firing and violation of any clause of Code of Conduct issued by the ECP.
