Law and order responsibilities in Sindh: IGP tells officer to furnish details of manpower, financial resources needed for polls

KARACHI: The Sindh police chief has sought from all officers of his force reports about the required manpower and financial resources so that the security strategy adopted for the general elections scheduled to be held in February and the code of conduct for political parties and the measures could be implemented.

IGP Riffat Mukhtar issued instructions in this regard while chairing a meeting in Karachi on Monday, which discussed ways to ensure law and order during the General Election 2024.

Officials said the meeting discussed in detail measures such as making General Election 2024 transparent, impartial and fair and implementation of the code of conduct issued in this regard, keeping in mind priorities and the trust and role of political parties in this regard.

The IGP said we have entered the second phase of general elections and have to complete our preparations ahead of time, so all officers should determine the required manpower and financial resources and send a comprehensive report containing all the necessary issues and steps in this regard.

The meeting was told that all police officers would not only ensure the implementation of the code of conduct issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan but would also establish an effective monitoring system regarding any violations.

Moreover, as regards the ban on the display and use of weapons, strict legal action will be ensured at all levels in case of violation. It was ordered that police reports related to election security should be made very effective and solid.

In this regard, the meeting was told, the police have to be relatively fast and proactive in the overall matters of preparation so that any situation can be easily controlled.

On the occasion of Election 2024, the security of all district returning and returning officers should be made highly coordinated and effective.

All the DIGs gave briefings on the details of the most sensitive and sensitive and normal classifications of police stations and briefed the meeting about the overall strategy regarding complete police control over the law and order situation.

The IGP directed that the security strategy for the general elections should be made more concrete and extraordinary. He said that coordinated contacts should be ensured with the Rangers and other law enforcement agencies regarding the implementation of the election code of conduct.

He emphasized that by taking the leaders, office-bearers and representatives of political parties into confidence at all levels, a mechanism should be devised so that not only fair elections could be held, but the law and order situation could be controlled through a joint security strategy.

The meeting was attended by Karachi’s additional IG, all other additional IGs, Karachi range DIGs, the DIGs of Headquarters Sindh, Special Branch, Driving Licence Branch, Establishment, Finance Sindh, Admin Karachi, Traffic Karachi, CIA and Security.’
