This letter refers to the news report ‘Number of Pakistanis optimistic about future up by 11pc: survey’ (November 27, 2023). The results of this survey are extremely out-of-sync with the economic ground realities. Inflation and unemployment are skyrocketing, the debt level is unsustainable, and foreign investment is made conspicuous by its absence.
The performance of the stock exchange can be quite misleading and should not be the basis for any economic optimism. I believe that pessimism among the people is growing as the authorities have failed to put together a credible economic plan to deal with our grave challenges.
