’90s BACK AT IT AGAIN!

beauty

Beauty and fashion trends change like the wind. What was ‘hot’ one minute might be a fashion faux pas the next. This is particularly true when it comes to seasonal trends. With the asymmetrical top, the slip dress, and the crop top, it is now beauty that sees the return of all the signature trends of the ’90s and ’00s. Indeed, after being spotted on the catwalks, picked up by several celebrities, the flagship beauty elements of these years are now on the streets and flooding our Instagram feeds. The ’90s fashion and beauty trends were explosive – it was never meant to be low-key. And what’s more? It was all about bold eye looks and hair accessories. And, unsurprisingly, some of the must-have ’90s accessories are back again this year. The hair accessories of 2021 are oversized with more colour and adornment. As we adjust to life beyond the face mask, those in the know understand how to balance the minimalist makeup we’ve become accustomed to and the slow re-emergence of glam as we adjust to life.

Featuring layered cuts emblematic of the period, brown lipstick or even pastel and glitter eye shadow, whether you sported natural hair, poker straight, or messy up-dos, This week You! has here are all the trends of this era brought up to date…

’90s BACK AT IT AGAIN!

Pastel eyeshadow

Although it was thought to have been forgotten since the 2000s, pastel eyeshadow is making a comeback. For this trend, the possibilities are multiple. It could come either in monochrome or mixed with other shades for the most daring, in halo, or even in smoky. For blue eyes, orange tones are to be favoured in order to bring depth to the look while purple will particularly highlight green eyes. As for brown eyes, they can do almost anything, depending on your preference. The trend that particularly stands out is to apply green, pink, or purple as a single colour on the eyelid and a look straight out of the 2000s is guaranteed!

Brown lips

Dark brown lips were a trend that was grungy and gothic and ruled for a long time even in early 2000’s. Thanks to the Kardashian-Jenner sisters for bringing back this style. Brown lipsticks are not considered unsuitable for young girls anymore. This is the combo we're seeing on every lip right now! Brown lipstick – paired with a slightly darker lip liner – is definitely one of the biggest makeup trends of the moment. If this key beauty detail from the 2000s is back in the spotlight, the 2021 version is softer. Indeed, forget the big demarcation between the lipstick and the lip liner, the ‘modern’ version is much more natural and all in nuance. To do this, be careful not to choose a lip liner that is too dark and to blend it well with the lipstick.

Coloured eyeliner

This summer, the eyelids are adorned with vibrant and joyful colours. Simple and effective, coloured eyeliner is the perfect trick to upgrade a look. This trend straight out of the 2000s is having a moment. Choose a colour that suits your iris for a successful result and blend it in a way to achieve a gradient effect.

Kohl me crazy

Very in-vogue during the 2000s with Christina Aguilera, Avril Lavigne, and Britney Spears, the black pencil line is back again. What’s completely different from the 2000s is to adapt according to your eye shape. One way to do it is to keep away from lowering the look by creating a soft line with the kohl to decrease the lash line and a bewitching look is assured. A thick rim of kohl around your entire lash line is a vibe this year which is making a comeback. Considering our entire face is covered with a mask except the eyes, this trend works perfectly and makes a statement without much effort. You don’t have to be a makeup pro to pull this off as it is just as simple as drawing a line along your natural eye shape.

Blush overdose

If blush is used to give a healthy glow to the complexion in a natural way, this year it is applied excessively on the cheeks. The 2021 detail? Add some on the tip of the nose to give the illusion of returning from vacation, while having a more uniform look.

The bob

Every ’90s kid had a layered bob with wispy bangs for sure. Considered one of the major hair trends of the 2000s, the bob is back in force in 2021. As with the '00s, several styles stand out this year: the plunging bob (pob), notably adopted by Victoria Beckham, and the straight bob. In addition to the layered bob, there is also Lady Diana’s iconic cut. The fringed bob hairstyles are undeniably part of the hair trends of the year. Adopted by many girls and top celebrities, this cut allows a wide choice of looks.

The two little wicks

It’s impossible to escape this trend. It's the hairstyle of the 2000s. Proudly worn by many celebrities in the past, this hair trend is adorned by everyone. After doing a ponytail, a bun, or a half up-do, we drop two small strands on the forehead to frame the face. The trick to upgrading this hair look even more? Add barrettes!

The blowout

You can't talk about ’90s hair without at least mentioning volume. The bouncy, full hairstyle is a great way to recreate the decade's volume with a slightly modern twist (think: looser curls and softer body).

’90s BACK AT IT AGAIN!

Headbands

Apart from being style statements, headbands are an easy way to turn even the worst of hair days into really-not-so-bad ones. Whether your hair just isn't cooperating or you woke up five minutes before your morning meeting, simply throw one on and watch the compliments roll in.

Space buns

Space buns are the ultimate cute-yet-edgy hairstyle, combining ’90s vibes with festival fun and an e-girl edge. Naturally, they became popular in 2020, and the trend is only growing in 2021. Surprisingly versatile, there are many different ways to wear space buns and adapt them to suit you – whether your hair is long, short, fine, thick, curly, or dead straight. Part your hair into two equal sections, then take one section, twist it around and secure with a tie and pins. It looks even cuter in a half up-do.
