Doesn’t the aroma of freshly prepared ‘desi’ food just tantalize your taste buds? No matter how much we enjoy Continental and Chinese food, it’s hard to resist our own ‘desi’ delights. Interestingly, each province of Pakistan is known for its own delectable cuisine.

So, in a bid to celebrate Independence Day and to give Karachiites a taste of authentic cuisines of our provinces, ‘The Pakistani’ restaurant at Movenpick Hotel, has organized a food festival - ‘Taste of Pakistan’. Since the place has been especially decked up keeping the focus on Pakistani culture, one can get the feel of our own tradition which is rich and diverse.

The restaurant seems to be the perfect ambiance for the event as it serves gastronomic Pakistani delicacies.

The a la carte restaurant claims to transform our ‘desi’ food into an exciting and tasty cuisine through the generous use of local spices, herbs and other ingredients. The traditional menu prepared by chef de cuisine, Munir will transport you to the Mughal era. The cooking style is very customary involving the use of clay pots, tandoors and overnight marination to bring out the unique flavours. “Pakistani cuisine is a blend of Indian, Far Eastern and Middle Eastern cooking techniques - creating a distinctive mix of complex flavours. ‘The Pakistani’ is all about exotic local flavours with a twist. Over here, you are sure to have freshly cooked food straight from the kitchen,” says Munir.

Coming back to the food festival, a special a la carte menu has been created which includes dishes from each province of Pakistan. The festival this year brings you authentic and exotic dishes that you’ve never tasted before. The seating arrangement has been divided into two parts, table and floor seating to provide you a regal experience. The restaurant can cater up to 110 guests at a time. For the table seating, striking hues of blue and yellow have been used while red and gold dominate the floor seating area with Pakistani patterns and traditional pillows. Beautiful chandeliers give the place a royal look and local customary art and paintings have been used to amplify the traditional feel of the place.

The sections within the seating arrangement have been created by wooden artefacts to provide each table its due privacy and space. The best part about the restaurant is the live cooking station which has been separated through clear glass. Your order being freshly prepared right in front of your eyes in tandoor, skewers and clay pots - sounds delightful right? Also, there is a board for Chef’s special where you can order exciting dishes off the menu. This is not all! Live ghazal singing with the use of tabla and sitar also add to the overall experience. There is a ‘paan’ stall as well which offers customized paans to the guests after their meal.

How can we forget food! Some famous dishes include ‘dum ghosht biryani’, ‘bakray ki champ’, ‘jhinga seekh’, ‘chicken pakoras’ etc. The menu is diverse and extensive offering rich desi dishes with a twist. The festival is on till August 19; so don’t miss out the chance to dine in a complete desi milieu. Happy eating!
