Nurturing emerging talent is a catalyst for fresh narratives and untapped creativity. Providing opportunities isn’t just a gesture; it’s an investment in the future of storytelling.

In an innovative move, Patakha Pictures, led by filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, proudly unveils the selected twenty filmmakers for its ‘Frame By Frame’ mentorship programme. This exclusive initiative breaks new ground by including both men and women from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and its Newly Merged Districts, a first for the program.

The programme, now in its fifth iteration, seeks to equip aspiring filmmakers with the tools and training to craft impactful short documentary films. This edition marks the first time it focuses specifically on the youth from the Newly Merged Districts, embracing both genders in this transformative opportunity.

Under this unique programme, 20 chosen fellows collaborate in pairs, with one based in the Newly Merged Districts and the other from the remaining districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Over nine months, these emerging filmmakers receive mentorship from international expert Noé Mendelle and Pakistani mentor Shahrukh Waheed, exploring themes like peacebuilding, tourism, climate change, education, art, culture, community work, sports, agriculture, minority groups, and women’s empowerment. The result? Ten thought-provoking documentaries that delve into and challenge societal norms.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy expresses her excitement, stating, “Our initiative promises to redefine Pakistan’s film ecosystem by providing a platform to capture and amplify diverse voices from this vibrant and unexplored terrain.”

From a plethora of submissions, the selected filmmakers include names like Laiba Hussan, Jamaima Afridi, Muhammad Irfan Afridi, and more, representing a dynamic mix of talent from Peshawar to Kurram.

Patakha Pictures, committed to empowering the next generation of Pakistani storytellers, continues to break barriers by fostering creativity and sparking essential dialogues. This initiative, fuelled by mentorship and funding, propels emerging filmmakers to push boundaries, creating films that resonate and ignite crucial conversations. The stage is set for a cinematic revolution, amplifying voices from an untapped terrain, promising a shift in Pakistan’s film landscape.
